InfoClima: A March and early spring with new record temperatures

The global average temperature for March 2024 reached a value of 14.14°C, 0.72°C higher than the 1991-2020 average and 0.1°C higher than the previous record of March 2016, according to Copernicus data.

The situation is becoming worrying, especially as the past winter was one of record high temperatures and a worrying start to 2024.

Moreover, March 2024 becomes part of a trend in which record high temperatures have been recorded since June for every month of 2023, continuing into early 2024. Basically, March becomes the tenth consecutive month breaking previous records for those months.

Also, the average sea surface temperature between 60°S-60°N for February reached a new record high of 21.07°C – 0.55°C higher than the 1991-2020 average and 0.18°C higher than the previous record in February 2016. This index is one we need to pay more attention to, as marine heat waves (including in the Black Sea) are still a threat.

April 1 came with a not-so-good “joke”, bringing extreme temperatures for this time of year, when in several cities such as Craiova, Cluj, Bacău temperatures exceeded 25°C, and in cases such as Buzău, Iași, Tulcea and Bucharest Filaret were very close to 30°C, according to ANM records.
